School Residency Programs

Bring Stories in Motion to your school!
Stories in Motion brings its innovative approach to teaching dance and movement to the schools by offering artist in residence workshops for students ages 2 - 12yrs. Customized short term or long-term residencies linking dance to language arts/literacy or social studies are available. Residencies can to tailored to any student population including special needs. Here is a sample of some popular workshops:

    Pre-School Residencies
    The Very Hungry Caterpillar- Pre-schoolers will delight in exploring the cycle of the butterfly through movement, dance prop exploration and interactive storytelling using Eric Carle's famous book.

    In the Tall, Tall Grass - Explore nature through movement and dance! This workshop combines dance, interactive storytelling, percussion and movement exploration to culminate in a beautiful re-enactment of this classic book by Denise Fleming.

    Silly Sally - Children will explore Audrey Wood's hilarious book through movement, interactive storytelling, music and improvisation.

    Elementary School Residencies
    Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain - Children will explore this East African story of a young boy's efforts to end a drought and bring the rain to the Kapiti Plain. Creative movement and dance improvisation guide students to re-create this story through movement.

    Exploring the Poetry of Langston Hughes through Movement - Students are immersed in the rich, yet accessible poetry of "Jazz poet", Langston Hughes, through dance, music and choreography.

    Grandmother Spider Brings the Sun- Children explore this delightful Native American Folktale through movement, poetry and music.

    Sadako & the 1,000 Cranes - This residency focuses on the moving story of Sadako and her fighting spirit to overcome the effects of the A-Bomb in Hiroshima. An inspiring story filled with universal themes of hope, peace and perseverance.

    The Underground Railroad - Students are introduced to this important period of African American history through picture books, music, movement invention and dance making.

    Things Don't Frighten Me At All - An interdisciplinary workshop designed to guide students to explore the literary style of Maya Angelou and painting style of graffiti artist Jean Michel Basquiat through dance making and choreography.

Staff Development Workshops
Stories in Motion also offers Staff Development workshops for teachers taught by Director, Ann Biddle. Drawing from 15 years experience conducting staff development workshops with New York and New Jersey public school teachers, dance companies and cultural organizations, Ms. Biddle offers professional development workshops, which focus on dance education, arts integration and literacy connections.
